Visit the Selingan Turtle Island and the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre
Pick-up from Sandakan airport (08:00hrs) or hotel (08:30hrs) and transfer to the Sandakan seafront jetty. At 09:30hrs, speed boat departs for Selingan Island, the main nesting area for green turtle, which lies 40km north of Sandakan in the Sulu Sea off Sabah’s east coast. Boat journey is approximately 1 hour. Check into simple accommodation facility and relax by the beach or take up snorkel at the nearby reefs.
After dinner, Park Ranger will signal the appropriate time to view huge Green turtles coming ashore to lay eggs. Witness the eggs being transferred to hatchery from the nesting site. Offer help to release baby turtles onto the shore and be overwhelmed by the emotion of seeing the turtles scrambling to the open sea by some natural instinct. Since the introduction of a conservative program in Selingan Island in 1967, a large number of turtles are now returning to lay their eggs and the chance to see the sea creature is almost certain every night. Overnight at the Island Chalet.
After breakfast, depart at 07:00hrs to return to Sandakan. Transfer to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre (30 mins journey) situated in the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve. Founded in 1964 the Centre helps once captive Orang Utans learn to climb and fend for themselves in the wild with the hope that one day they may return to the forest. The semi-wild Orang Utans may return to the platform provided by the Centre for milk and bananas twice a day during the process of returning to the forest. Visitors will get a close up view of these Orang Utans and have the chance to photograph them at close range. Witness the feeding of the orphaned Orang Utans, walk along jungle trails on board walk, visiting the information centre, exhibits and video presentation on the rehab of these remarkable primates.
After tour, transfer to airport or to your respective hotel. Tour ends at 13:00hrs.
Optional Add-Ons at the end of the tour
Accommodation on all Sabah tours is basic. Rooms are generally twin bedded, with air-conditioning, ceiling fans, mosquito netting, (except Mountain Lodge) and attached en-suite bathrooms with hot showers.
As these lodges are in remote locations, rooms are simple, clean and comfortable. Although they provide a unique and memorable experience, you must be prepared to live without the creature comforts of home.
Please be advised that the trip to Selingan Island involves boat transfers. In the event of adverse weather conditions during or before the journeys, the boat operator has the absolute discretion to cancel or postpone the trip if it is deemed that it will jeopardize the safety of passengers. In the event of cancellation, a replacement tour will be offered.
